Home

Many people agree. So take care together to keep good pavements. Coworking as walkers means better facilities.

Future

What should be done to make sure that everebody can walk nicely everywhere? Five receipes from my book.

* Building Community

All eighborhoods, buildings and other locations stimulate walking. They are made for it. Walkers know the routes, the obstacles and the solutions. Neighbors encourage each other to walk, and sometimes help each other. This is civil society organizing itself.

* For Everyone: The Nearby Bonus

Governments and organizations invest in space for walking and moving. They make the size of the Nearby Bonus ( doing much activities on a safe, walkable distance) as large as possible. This is the result of adequate money, time and attention for a common good.

* Promoting Walking: Leading by Example

There are examples and role models. Besides thse big heroes, there are smaller heroes. For example, those who are active on social media and give attention to walking. Or, those who walk with enthusiasm. Everyone is a potential leader in her or his own circle.

* Tools to Slow Climate Change

It is widely recognised and appreciated that walking helps to reduce CO2 and particulate matter emissions. Optimal space for every person on earth becomes the norm. Besides more biking, als more feet are being used. The right of every inhabitant to good pavements and walking is realized.

* Walking as a Pleasant Consumer Experience

There are more consumer items, for sale and for free. Enetrepreneurs see many opportunities for business. Consumers have choices when it comes to walking: they do so, en masse. So: make good use of the ever-richer world.

Idea

To walk! An issue of the past? No, a short or a long trip: walking is just as normal as eating and drinking. But the reality is that often wheels replace feet. We increasingly sit behind screens.

Yet in many countries citizens and professionals find a way to inspire pedestrians. Or to improve the facilities that encourage walking.

Therefore, Derk van der Laan offers you this service. Cartoons: Len Munnik. For the young and old. To inspire health professionals, entrepreneurs and aware citizens.

Bio

Derk van der LaanDerk van der Laan, a Dutch beat reporter, discovered that ordinary walking gets little attention. Van der Laan: "People often sit still. Their mind does not signal them to move. They choose to get around by motorized vehicles. And should they go on foot, they do not get enough space".  Derk: "This happens in many countries. I am a specialist in urban planning, traffic and transportation. I write clear, vivid stories. Or short articles. I bike and walk a lot. I live in Amsterdam, but you can meet me all over the Netherlands. Or travelling through Europe. I am comfortable with the sounds and smells of life in India and the United States".
