For the first time a walker won a green index in 2019. Dirk Groot picks up and analyses litter while walking. He is number 1 in the Sustainable 100 of the Dutch Trouw newspaper. He lives in a new town, Purmerend. "His initiative connects people and has set a whole movement in motion", the jury says. "He makes problems understandable and verifiable".
As a pedestrian Groot goes extremely far in his contribution to a cleaner environment: he photographs every piece of waste, registers it in an app and writes about his findings. He is very active on social media. His entrepreneurial spirit is in line with my plea that climate activists should focus more on down to earth activities instead of abstract goals. See my book 'Walking for Me, You and Millions More. What Groot does, is inviting, understandable and controllable.
